Adaptogen Herbs-What are they?

Adaptogens are a class of herbs traditionally used to support the body’s ability to respond to stress and maintain balance over time. Rather than targeting a single symptom, adaptogenic herbs work more broadly, helping the body adapt to physical, mental, and emotional challenges. Our bodies must adapt to big and small stressors every day. These can be anything from extreme weather to illness or mental stress. Adaptogens are valued for their gentle, normalizing influence and are often used as part of long-term wellness routines rather than for immediate effects.

Adaptogens help:

-restore internal balance

-support healthy immune response

-curtail overactive adrenal response to daily stressors

-improve mental focus

Herbalists describe adaptogens as non-specific in their action, meaning they support overall resilience rather than stimulating or sedating the body in one direction. Depending on the individual and the herb, adaptogens may help support steady energy, mental clarity, emotional balance, and recovery from ongoing stress. They are often used during periods of increased demand, seasonal transitions, or when someone feels depleted or out of rhythm.

Adaptogenic herbs are also known for their cumulative nature. Their benefits tend to build gradually with consistent use, making them especially well suited for teas, tinctures, and daily rituals. Commonly used adaptogens include roots, berries, leaves, and mushrooms from a variety of herbal traditions, including Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Western herbalism. Common adaptogens are ashwagandha root, eleuthero root, holy basil/tulsi, and schisandra berries (see individual posts).
