Schisandra Berry (Schisandra chinensis)
Schisandra is a small red berry native to northern China and Russia and is a foundational herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Known as the “five-flavor berry,” schisandra embodies all five tastes—sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and pungent—reflecting its broad and balancing influence. The dried berries are commonly used in teas, tinctures, and decoctions.
In TCM, schisandra is used to support endurance, vitality, and adaptability. It has long been valued as a tonic for individuals experiencing fatigue, stress, or depletion.
Schisandra’s primary active constituents include lignans (such as schisandrin), organic acids, essential oils, and polysaccharides. These compounds are associated with schisandra’s adaptogenic, antioxidant, and liver-supportive properties.
Herbalists classify schisandra as an adaptogen, traditionally used to help the body respond to stress while maintaining internal balance. It is also considered an astringent, helping to conserve energy and fluids, and a tonic, supporting long-term vitality. Schisandra is often described as clarifying and focusing rather than sedating.
Energetically, schisandra is warming and slightly drying, with a gathering quality that helps consolidate scattered energy. It is frequently combined with other adaptogens such as eleuthero or reishi for formulas supporting stamina and focus. Like many tonic herbs, schisandra is best used consistently over time to support resilience and balance.
